Fatal Smile @ the Whiskey A Go Go

What a pleasure it is to draw a band whose larger-than-life stage presentation does not undermine their openness to fans. I respect and adore these guys. The quick sketch was done with watercolor brush pens, pastel, and marker brush pens. I only had a very short time to do this as the Whiskey does not have very long set times, so I think it was done in about 20 minutes. But I like the Whiskey because they are not jerks about my sketching. In fact, they are quite nice. Always have been. Since 1992.

Ah, the sweet sound of Doom Psychedelia...why waste time listening to anything else? Black Math Horsemen are deep, mysterious, heavy yet smooth - like a quality Porter with a side of chocolate cheesecake. I used watercolor pen and oil pastel. This was done at Safari Sam's in Hollywood.

Witchcraft at the Echo. They are my favorite band. I washed in the basic forms with an orange watercolor brush and refined them with a brown brush pen then a black brush pen for some details. It was done live without reference in the time of the show. I had a great time, met some nice people, and plan to see them anytime they are back in LA.

This is some preliminary ink art for a Mess of Bones illustration. The idea is to re-create an Atlanta-based rock band from the 90s with its individual members' expressiveness. I used a lot of reference material for each person because the details matter with musicians. And I listened to their CDs repeatedly while I was working to channel the spirit of the band. I usually don't work this way, but I was up for a challenge.

This was used in Episode 7 of Mr. Sprinkles. It was a fine, dark cartoon with parodies in every episode. I guess you could encapsulate the moral as "Imagination, although unappreciated by "normal" people, is what lives on." I agree. I had the fantastic honor of working under the direction of Justin Roiland, with the creative leadership of the legendary Dan Harmon. Jack Black exec produced.

I did this for a large scuba expo. The commission was to do something with a gorgonian sea fan and a garibaldi fish. Well, I guess I did it. I think they were hoping for something more macho - like perhaps a fish with a large gun and a sea fan that casts ominous shadows and drives a Hummer.

I have been storyboarding, animating, and designing on Mr. Sprinkles, VH1's animated segment in Acceptable TV. We had to work super-fast, as the decision to make another episode was in the hands of the viewers who voted online. So we had less than 5 days to make a cartoon short each week. We had to be very economical in our process and draw like the wind. We all played lots of roles.

I had not seen this sequence for years when I unpacked it recently. I had forgotten how much action there was in it. Much of this was not scripted, and I improvised some gags of my own. A good board artist enjoys that a lot - getting to punch up the humor.

Know what delights me more than anything in the world??? Being so engrossed in a project that I am giggling while I draw, forgetting it is lunch time, and wanting just a few more minutes (hours, actually) to get the idea out before I forget it because it is so fresh to me that I do not want to lose it. Dilbert gave me that. It was a show that was, honestly, less than the sum of its parts. Who knows why? The scripts were funny. The drawings were funny. Some of the voice acting was funny. But when you put it all together, somehow it was not funny anymore. But it was a great crew of artists, and there was room to create because it was so new. I love new shows.

You have to laugh when 2 grown men are fighting on a kids' holiday mall train. Why a mall? Why not something easy to draw and design? Why a train? Hot air balloons are nice and round, like a circle template. I sometimes think that at Harvard's "Writing for Television 101," they give out lists of what is hardest for animators to draw so they can feel like they are getting their money's worth. That is why I charge by the hour.
